"Marrakech!" Aerodrome Exterior. This and some character designs were made for a steampunk-themed game that never happened. It is my first attempt at photobashing. Executed in Adobe Photoshop, Sketchup, and Vue10 Infinite.
"Marrakech!" The Jellyfish Man. Character concept. Yes, a human head grafted to a jellyfish in a misguided attempt at immortality! Executed in Sketchup, Poser, Vue, and Photoshop
"Marrakech!" The Steaminator. Character concept. Another experiment in photobashing. The arms are from Poser as is the background. I fell in love with the screaming dental dummy head and the rest followed. Executed in Photoshop, Poser, Sketchup, and Vue.
"How Second Wife Became First Wife" Personal project. Executed in Sketchup, Vue, Poser & Photoshop
"At Peace Amongst the Tiatans" Personal project. Executed in Sketchup, Vue, Poser & Photoshop
"The House of the Faun" Private commission. Executed in Sketchup, Vue, Poser, Adobe Illustrator & Photoshop.
"Sunset Over the Temple" Personal project. Executed in Sketchup, Vue, Poser & Photoshop. This is the first thing I rendered. I used it for a slide in a class on using rendering engines with SketchUp. Little did I know...
"Immortals" Concept Illustration. Some of the only art I have to show for that show. The rest was logistics. Yuck. Executed in SketchUp and Poser, rendered in Vue. Post-processing in Photoshop.
"Immortals" Concept Illustration Closeup. Executed in SketchUp and Poser, rendered in Vue. Post-processing in Photoshop.
"From the Ashes" Tower, Concept Illustration. A tower study for a castle wall built from modern post-apocalypse ruins. Executed in SketchUp, rendered in Vue. Post-processing in Photoshop.
"Queen Mab" Exterior view. Personal project. Yes, this does resemble the P.K. 40 Fledermaus from Maschinen Krieger! Modeled in SketchUp (including the engines and gimbals) the greebles are kitbash.
"Queen Mab" Exterior view. Personal project. Modeled in SketchUp.
"Queen Mab" Exterior views. Finished design presentation based on the previously displayed model. Executed in Layout and Photoshop. (If I'm gonna do the whole Maschinen Krieger thing I might as well do it all the way!)
"Queen Mab" Exterior views. Finished design presentation based on the previously displayed model. Executed in Layout and Photoshop.
"Queen Mab" Exterior views. Finished design presentation. Camouflage breakdown. Based on the previously displayed model. Executed in Layout and Photoshop.
The Truck. Interior/Exterior. A personal project, executed in Sketchup. My first crack at vehicle design. The suspension is based on the Curiosity rover. Hats off to those mad geniuses at JPL.
Interior view of the cab. I went waaaay overboard on this. The doors come off, and the armor shutters rise and lower. Yadda, yadda. It was my 'look like you're doing something' project for work.
Rear view of same. There is surprisingly little kitbash going on here. I started before I had a lot of access to high-quality stuff and just made my own to order. The winch, gun, tires, and canvas covers are about it.
The Truck. Interior/Exterior. Finished design presentation, based on the previously displayed model. I WILL get around to putting this in a rendering engine eventually. Executed in Layout and Photoshop.
Ulysses, Exterior. This was an exercise in radial modeling and those rivet heads were a challenge. The landing gear has a bunch of kitbash in it as does the underside. The landing jacks were inspired by the Disney Moonliner. Executed in SketchUp.
Ulysses, Exterior. Landig jack detail. Yes, Substance Painter would be a good idea for this if I were rendering it. But Ulysses was intended for making drawings, so that would not work. Hence lots of tiiiney circles. Executed in SketchUp.
Ulysses, Exterior. Underside detail. This is intended to be an ugly duckling. A throwback to the work of Kurt Röschl and Fred Freeman's gosh-wow 50s Sci-Fi illustrations. I do like Retro...Executed in SketchUp.
Ulysses Design presentation. The floorplans were done as a separate model and did not have an exterior wall attached since these were schematic. Executed in Sketchup, Layout, Adobe Illustrator, and Photoshop.
Ulysses in a Book Cover. Modeled in SketchUp and rendered in KeyShot LOTS of post in Photoshop! I found a fantastic riveted sheet metal texture so no Substance Designer necessary!
"Marrakech!" Exterior opening shot. I have broken Marrakech! into two sections; rendered and painted and SketchUp/Photoshop since they follow different workflows. These are faster and better suited for storyboards. Executed in Photoshop and Sketchup.
"Marrakech!" Interior Plenge and Sons Offices, Marrakech. Executed in Photoshop and Sketchup.
"Marrakech!" Interior Plenge and Sons Offices, Marrakech. Reverse angle. Executed in Photoshop and Sketchup.
"Marrakech!" Land Crawler Vehicle Data Sheet. Executed in Photoshop and Sketchup.
Southwest Museum Renovation, California Hall. Concept illustration. My first and only foray into exabit design. Executed in Sketchup and Photoshop.
Southwest Museum Renovation, Plains Hall. Concept illustration. Executed in Sketchup and Photoshop.
Southwest Museum Renovation, Sprague Hall. Concept illustration. Executed in Sketchup and Photoshop.
Miscellaneous Illustrations
Within a year of learning digital modeling, I discovered rendering engines. Now, these are common, but in those days (when dinosaurs walked the earth) nobody in my industry had ever heard of them. That was when I discovered that if I could model, I could “illustrate”. Over the years I fiddled with a bunch of workflows and tuned up my Photoshop skills. Most of the illustrations and previz I have done, I put into folders relevant to the show they were made for, but this leaves illustration work, from private commissions, personal projects, and shows I have not included otherwise. So, here it is. Some of my projects more properly fall under the heading of graphic design, so you may want to check in that section of this portfolio as well.
