National Treasure Book of Secrets
Interior/Exterior Sunken Steamer, Main Deck. Plan, section, and Iso. This was my first digital drawing of any size. It could be very simple because everything would be covered in marine life we stole from Pirates of the Caribbean.

Interior/Exterior Sunken Steamer, Sections 8, 9, and 10 plus Details. We built a slope into the set as the bottom of Falls Lake is flat and the sunken hull needed to be on an angle.

Interior/Exterior Sunken Steamer, Interior and Exterior Details. BY the way, the set was cut not for budget or schedule, but because someone in production had a 'better idea'. Seriously.

Interior Cave Entrance. 1/4" Plans and elevations. I was saved from sectioning this by our supervising Art Director. He had a thing for models and he had a professional model maker sculpt a maquette for the sculptors to cut up and measure.

National Treasure Book of Secrets

National Treasure 2: Book of Secrets, hired me as a newly minted, assistant art director to design a sunken ship interior that would be shot in Fall’s Lake on the Universal back lot. We had just started construction when the set was canceled. Still, I had built the entire set in 3D and made working drawings from it. As the wreck was a hundred years old, it was a rusting hulk encrusted with marine life, so I did the details in pencil to better include the crusty bits. After the ship, I worked on the City of Gold set. I was tasked with lofting the huge cavern space for the plaster crew. I had the cavern in 3d, from a LIDAR scan of our set’s “white” model. I sectioned the 3d mesh digitally which saved a huge amount of time preparing the drawings. Ok, ok; In 2006 this was a big deal, today meh. And no, I don’t include those sections because they are embarrassing. I also designed the mechanical effects and ornament for the City of Gold entry cavern. This I did in pencil to capture the heavy character of the ornament. Confronted with the same design problems today, I would probably do it the same way. If only I could find my drafting machine in the garage…
