Exterior Fredericksburg, Working Set. Top, FG Buildings are facades. Bottom, Beal House. The beal house had a functional interior and was constructed over an archeological site. A special foundation had to be prepared to spread the building's load.

Exterior Fredericksburg, Working Location/Set. There were vacant lots at intervals where we placed fences and buildings. One end of the street is CG and the other we built.

Exterior Fredericksburg, Chapel, Rough, front. This building was used to cover a late 19th C. Pump house for Harper's Ferry Township water authority.

Exterior, Chancellorsville House. Working Set, Damaged Configuration. This building had to be intact and then damaged. A removable section was exchanged for a demolished one, painted on site, and dressed with debris.
Exterior Armory, Harper's Ferry, Rail Yard Rough. As this no longer existed the set was built in a field near Hagerstown, Maryland.
Exterior Armory, Harper's Ferry, Rail Yard Working Set. The cattle cars are dummies and sit on prefabricated foam trucks. The building behind only reaches three feet below the tops of the cars.

Gods and Generals was a civil war epic shot on locations all over the tri-state area. It was my second job as an assistant art director. I roughed out a big chunk of Fredericksburg, which was shot at Harper’s Ferry, and Harper’s Ferry, which was shot at Hagerstown Maryland (don’t ask…). Back then (when dinosaurs roamed the earth), It was the job of set designers and art directors to design signage. I was one of the few at the time who had learned Adobe Illustrator. Thus, I found myself designing buildings, and the signage to go on them. A practice that continued for a few years until the I.A. graphic artists local was formed. I include a couple. By the way, I apologize for the quality of the images; we were so spread out it was almost impossible to get pictures of my sets as they shot. I was a hundred miles away, prepping, by the time a set was photo-worthy. The images are screen grabs from the video (and I do mean video. Loooong time ago.) I’ll have to get onto Netflix and collect some replacements. Someday…
