Matchstick Men was my third assistant art direction job. We completely built the interior of the main character’s house, which duped a back-yard location in Encino while acknowledging the Santa Monica location we used for the front of the house. We had to build both of these exteriors partially on set including the swimming pool from the Encino location. It was probably the most successful soundstage exterior I have ever done. It could not be told from our location shoots. It was also the only time I have ever overseen the printing of a Translight that was mostly a blank, cloudless sky shot at the Encino location. It sounds silly, but Ridley was insistent and, in the end, he used that trans-lite as an enormous lighting instrument. The results speak for themselves. This was also some of my earliest use of 3d in the concepting process (not that it matters much, but I was very proud at the time).
